After winning back-to-back State B championships in 1995 and 1996 and a third-place state tournament finish in 1997, the Baltic Lady Bulldogs, coached by Bob Sittig and Marilyn Schmitz-Stadem, entered the 1998 season with high expectations. The team did not disappoint. They were the Tri-Valley Conference regular season champions, won the Tri-Valley Conference tournament championship, and posted a 17-2 regular season record, all of which earned them the #2 seed entering the state tournament. The state tournament field was talented and balanced, with six of the teams having 20 or more wins, with one sportswriter describing the Lady Bulldogs as a slight favorite. The Lady Bulldogs defeated Burke in the opening game by a 20-point margin, and in the semi-finals, they won a 59-53 overtime thriller over Mt. Vernon. The team brought home the program’s 3rd State B championship in four years by defeating Willow Lake 53-41 in the championship game, finishing the season with a 23-2 record. Karly Hegge set a state-tournament record, scoring 38 points in the semi-final win over Mt. Vernon and breaking the previous record of 34 points set by Baltic alumni Sherri Brende in 1995. Karly Hegge, Kassy Hegge, and Arica Schultz were named to the All-Tournament Team, and Karly and Kassy were named All-State.
