Dear Students, Parents, and Staff,
As the school year draws to a close, I want to take this opportunity to update everyone on the high school addition building project. If you have not recently, I encourage you to drive by the construction site as I believe you will be amazed and excited by the work that has already taken place. Below are some specific bits of information.
Currently, most of the site prep work has been completed, which involved moving an incredible amount of dirt (more on that later). A large majority of footings have been poured, and some walls are already up.
- The original estimate was for the project to be completed in August 2024 in time for the start of the 2024-25 school year. I am pleased to report that the contractor, Hoogendoorn Construction, reports that after two months of construction, they are on track to meet that completion date, although we recognize supply issues and weather can still adversely affect the construction schedule.
- If you have driven south on 5th Street (the east side of the school), you may have noticed a large new pile of dirt on the east side of 5th Street in the Grant Park development. The owner of Grant Park, Brian Hefty, is allowing the school to stockpile excess dirt on his property, which potentially may save the school approximately $150,000 by not having to transport the dirt further from our site. The district hopes to construct a new parking lot by filling in the ditch north of Bulldog Avenue southeast of the football grandstand, and if that happens, the dirt will be needed for that project, which is not part of the bid for the high school addition. Without going into great detail, it is important to note that the ditch area is a designated "wetland," so filling it in will require wetland mitigation, which adds to the cost of the parking lot. We are waiting for the cost estimate for constructing the parking lot before the school board decides whether to move forward with the additional parking lot.
- I would also like to note that the Hefty family donated approximately $200,000, which allowed the district to purchase the land directly east of the school on which the new high school is being built. In addition, the Hefty family paid for the construction of the paved walking path on the east and north sides of the football/track complex, they paid for earthwork on the east side of the running track that was endangered by water and erosion, they donated money that was used to construct sidewalks from the school east to 5th Street and west to 4th Street, and several years ago they donated a significant amount of money specifically for the construction of a fitness center without which our fitness center would most likely have never been built. Thank you to the Hefty family for their continued support of the school.
- Over the past few months, you may have heard about some zoning issues affecting the construction of the new high school addition. Without going into detail, the City Council and the City Planning and Zoning Commission revised certain City ordinances that allowed the building project to proceed as planned and without delay. There is another ordinance change that will be addressed at a later date that would allow perpendicular parking on the south side of Bulldog Avenue north of the new building, and we anticipate those changes will also be approved. Thank you to the City Council and Planning and Zoning Commission for their willingness to make these beneficial changes.
- I could go on and on about the details of the new school, but for now, I will only address one more topic and plant a seed. In the new gym, there are plans to install video/scoreboards, and as is common practice, the school will be soliciting sponsorships that will include advertising with the amount and type of advertising based on the size of the sponsorship. I am very pleased to report that we have already secured two mega (my term) sponsors, Hefty Seed Company and Orthopedic Institute, who have each pledged $20,000 per year for five years, which will be used to offset the purchase of the video/scoreboards. I am planting the seed that this coming fall, the district will conduct a campaign to secure additional sponsorships, which can be single or multi-year commitments and of a much lower amount than the mega sponsors. Businesses, organizations, and individuals who might consider being sponsors should be on the lookout for more information to come.
- The construction of a new school is an exciting time, and I want to thank the taxpayers of the Baltic School District for their support of our school. The future of Baltic is bright!
